2008-2009: RGHDS vs. Gerrard Berman in Day School Adult Softball Match-Up
On May 18, the grown-ups got their recess time, too, at a parents/staff softball game between RGHDS and Gerrard Berman Day School of Oakland, New Jersey. Woodmont Day Camp hosted the day school community match-up. It was a wonderful, fun, and exciting event. RGHDS won the game 12-5 against a great team of challengers.
I want to thank both our terrific players, and everyone who came out to cheer us on, and to welcome the Gerrard Berman community who came to support their team. We showed the best side of our school family in terms of sportsmanship and hachnasat orchim (welcoming guests).
I'd like to highlight the individual contributions of our team by going through the batting order:
Lou Singer, lf - 2 for 4, with a double. On base 3 times, 3 runs scored.
Andy Barrett, p - 2 for 4, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI. Pitched a complete game. No walks allowed.
Jeff Jacobs, cf - 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly, 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. 7 putouts in the outfield, and an assist at the plate.
Steve Hymowitz, ss - 3 for 4, with 2 doubles, 3RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Phil Mosner, 1b - 4 for 4, with a double, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.
David Klein, 3b - 3 for 4, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Rob Matofsky, 2b - 2 for 2, with a double and 2 RBIs.
David Zedeck, 2b - Started the game for us, but was injured by an errant throw early on. David valiantly stayed at the field to support his teammates and show the other team how much heart we have.
Jack Berkowitz, rf - 1 for 3, with an RBI. Made a great catch to end the first inning with the bases loaded.
Nanci Goldman & Paulette Viana, sf - Batted and fielded with distinction.
Rabbi Scott Bolton, c - Hit 3 long shots to right and center field, but was victimized by perfect defensive positioning. Caught a great game, and tagged out a runner at the plate to end the second inning.
We have already begun planning for a rematch next year in Oakland.
I hope that we can make this an annual event that will continue to raise our level of ruach, and bring us closer to another community of families who are committed to Jewish education.
