2008-2009: Social Studies is Shining at RGHDS
Social Studies Shine at RGHDS
Third Grade Multicultural Celebrations
This past Tuesday, classes 3A and 3B had wonderful multicultural celebrations. These celebrations were culminating activities for the third grade Social Studies curriculum, in which students study world cultures. The class 3A celebration featured a Mexican dance performance, and origami and Haiku demonstrations and lessons for parents, presented by the students. This event ended with the sharing of delicious foods from many cultures.
The class 3B celebration included a Powerpoint presentation created and narrated by the students, an African drum performance, and a series of interactive learning stations and beautiful student projects. Kol HaKavod to the third grade students and their teachers, Tina Chamak and Susan Siegel. Thank you also to Harriet Spevack for her great technology instruction, and to our parent volunteers, who helped to make these events so successful.
Sixth Grade Medieval and Renaissance Board Games
Sixth grade students culminated their Social Studies learning of the Medieval and Renaissance periods with a board game event for students and their parents this Wednesday. Every youngster displayed and explained an original board game that he or she created that depicted a theme and information learned from these times in history. These wonderful student projects showed both great learning and creativity. The event ended with an opportunity for all in attendance to participate in playing these games. Congratulations to our sixth graders for a job well done. Thanks to our grade 6 social studies teacher, Rhonda Klein, who always makes learning a positive experience.
Fourth Grade Native American Studies
As part of our 4th grade Social Studies curriculum, students learn about Native Americans. This unit of study culminated yesterday with a presentation for parents featuring student dioramas of Native American scenes, research reports, and original art creations of Native American clothing and artifacts. Mazel Tov to the students of class 4A and their teacher, Sandi Orenstein, for a job well done!
